4 Health Tips for Your Child’s Eyes

 Regular Eye Checkups

You and your child should make regular eye checkups at a minimum of once a year. As your child grows their eyes grow as well which can lead them to needing some kind of corrective lenses or glasses. As a mother, when over 40 the odds of degenerative eye diseases increases exponentially so it can be easy just to make an appointment for your child and yourself. Learning difficulties in school can be due to a child not being able to see the front of the class clearly so this can impact your child’s educational development as well as social development.

Limit Contact Lenses Being In

Although some children and teenagers are scared of putting a contact lens in their eye, many are willing to try. A contact lens can be daily or in the case of Biofinity can be worn up to a week without cleaning or changing it. This is not advised as infections can occur but there are lenses that outperform the rest. Keeping daily contacts in for weeks and months can lead to scarring behind the eye and other complications. If your child is on the computer for long periods of time you should tell them to wear glasses late at night as eyes can be tired from looking at a screen for extended periods of time.

 Sunglasses

It doesn’t matter if your child does not want to wear sunglasses or not, this is something you should teach them to do. Much like the skin, the eyes need to be protected from the UV rays of the sun. 80 percent of the UV light that will be exposed to the eyes will happen by the time your child is 18 years old. Teaching them early to wear sunglasses with UV protection can be as important as anything as damaged eyes from the sun sometimes never recover. This is a good habit that they will pass down to their children and it can also make them aware of the importance of eye health.

Make Them Take Breaks From The Computer

With all of the technology that is readily available to your child or teenager, you have to teach them the virtue of moderation as staring at a computer or other digital screen for too long can damage eyes. There are even guides online that give limits that a child or teenager should be on the computer or watching TV. With all of this being said, if your teen is doing something constructive on the computer then just let them know that breaks are important. A good tip is to look away from the computer screen for around 30 seconds every 20 minutes and it allows your eyes to relax.

As you can see there are plenty of things that you can do to ensure the health of your eyes. It is something that you should start putting into your everyday routine so it becomes second nature. The eyes are extremely sensitive so treat them with care. Do not brush off eye care and just think you can see well enough or let your child tell you that they can see well without seeing an optometrist. Keep your eyes well taken care of and they will take care of you.
